Riverside Cafés, the Sky Park & Lhong 1919 — a Thonburi Evening
🕓 Late afternoon to evening · ~3–4 hours🚶 On foot + a short ride · no river crossing🌇 Time the Sky Park for the golden hour📍 Every stop is on the Thonburi bank near us
Some days you don't need to cross the river at all — our Thonburi bank lines the water with good things already. Leave the hotel in the late afternoon, take a riverside café on the Chao Phraya, ride up to the Sky Park as the light turns gold, then stroll to Lhong 1919, a Chinese-style riverside heritage house. This is the easy half-day evening we love to suggest when guests want to slow down.
Why this evening stays on one bank
Most guests overlook that our Thonburi bank has its own handsome stretch of river. The Chao Phraya Sky Park — the world's first public park built across a river bridge — is only about 1.3 km from the hotel, or a ~15-minute walk, and Lhong 1919, the Chinese-style riverside heritage house, sits on the same side. No ferry to catch, no long ride. So we shaped this gentle evening to amble between them, catch the light, and be back in bed within minutes.
The route
4:00 PM — Leave the hotel · a riverside café in Khlong San: start slow with an iced coffee at a café on the Chao Phraya around Khlong San and ICONSIAM, catching the river breeze before you walk. Ask us at check-in which spots are open and have a good view at that time of year.
4:45 PM — Walk the riverbank to Lhong 1919: follow the water round to Lhong 1919, a restored old steamship wharf rebuilt as a courtyard cluster of Chinese-style houses, with an old Mazu shrine, Chinese wall paintings and small riverside shops. An easy place to wander the architecture and take photos.
5:30 PM — Chao Phraya Sky Park at golden hour: walk on (about 1.3 km from the hotel) up to the Chao Phraya Sky Park, the world's first park on a river bridge. Stroll out over the middle of the river for a 360° view — arrive around sunset for the finest light.
6:30 PM — Dusk in Kudi Chin: come down off the Sky Park on the Thonburi side and walk into the riverside Kudi Chin quarter. Stop by Santa Cruz Church, try the charcoal-baked khanom farang cakes made to the old recipe, and find a quiet riverside dinner in the old neighbourhood.
7:30 PM — Home: from Kudi Chin a Grab or taxi back to Khlong San takes ~10 minutes (or retrace the riverbank on foot if you still have the legs). Shower and sleep — a full evening that never wore you out.
Timing the light: aim to be on the Sky Park about 30 minutes before sunset — you catch both the golden light and the city lights coming on.
Shoes and water: this half day is mostly walking, ~3–4 km. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water; the evening river breeze on the Thonburi side is just cool enough.
Dress for the sacred spots: the Mazu shrine at Lhong 1919 and Santa Cruz Church are living places of worship — cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low, and ask before photographing interiors.
Rainy-season swap: if showers threaten, start at Lhong 1919 where there's cover, then head up to the Sky Park once the sky clears — or ask us to check the forecast at check-in.
Common questions
Do I need to take a ferry or a long ride?
Not at all — every stop is on the same Thonburi bank as the hotel. The Sky Park is only about 1.3 km away, walkable. Coming back from Kudi Chin you can take a short ~10-minute Grab if you're tired.
How late is the Sky Park open — can I go in the evening?
The Sky Park stays open into the evening, though closing time can shift by season. Go around sunset to be safe, and check the current closing time beforehand — or just ask us at check-in.
Is there an entry fee for Lhong 1919?
Wandering the riverside grounds and the shrine is generally open to visitors, but opening hours and any special events can change — best to check before you go, or ask us to look it up.
